Support networks in sport
Why do we play sport? To stay fit and healthy, to socialize with our friends, to get our “fix” of weekly competition, or is it to release built up frustration? I would suggest that it is a mixture of the above and you could probably list a few more factors of our inherent need to play sport. However, I would propose that we all play sport because we get a tremendous sense of self-satisfaction from doing so.
Yes, I understand that we do not always win, and adversity is part of the sporting arena, but during the competition whether we loose or win, we can all take home personal memories of the moments were we performed well. This in turn fuels our feeling of improved self-satisfaction, and in turn leads to developing an intrinsic love to play the sport, as we strive to create more feelings self-satisfaction.
Behind all successful athletes there has to be an equally successful support network. I define successful athletes as those who remain committed and loyal to the sport, enjoy their participation, and enhance the growth of the sport, whatever level or age group they are competing in. All athletes need a very strong support network that facilitates them to develop this internal love for the game.
The support network maybe an involved coaching staff that spends time getting to know the athlete, it may be parents or “loved ones” that never complain when driving you all over the province for training sessions and competitions and provide an ear when you need to talk, it could be a close group of friends that enjoy competing together, or ….
Whatever your support network is do not take it for granted, as other less successful athletes may not have had the luxuries that you’ve been lucky enough to receive. Every now and then take the time to thank your support network. The chances are your support network help because they want to, but a deserving pat on the back can go along way to continue to strengthen this priceless factor in successful sport.
